About the programme
The M.A. in Media and Information is a 30-credit residential degree from the Department of Media and Information in Michigan State University's College of Communication Arts and Sciences. It has three focus areas: game studies, HCI/UX, and media policy. Students on the HCI/UX path build their plan with an advisor.
The plan of study requires a 1-credit seminar (MI 810), one theory course (Theories of Media & Information, or Theories of Games & Interactive Design) and one methods course. For UX students, the methods course is often Advanced Methods of Understanding Users. Students also take at least three specialisation courses, such as Interaction Design or Interactive Usability and Accessibility. Electives fill the remaining credits, and at least 16 credits must be MI 800-level.
Students choose Plan A (a 4-6 credit thesis), Plan B (a 4-6 credit project) or a Plan B poster option, which can use internship credits. MSU also runs a separate online MS in User Experience; this M.A. is the in-person option.
- Format
- In person in East Lansing, mostly face-to-face classes. The degree is STEM-designated, and international students on F-1 visas are eligible.
- Length
- 30 credits. Most students finish in three semesters at the full-time load of 9 credits a semester; internship or project choices can make it longer.
- Cost
- 2026-27 tuition is $978.25 a credit (Michigan residents) or $1,814.75 a credit (non-residents), which is about $29,348 or $54,443 for 30 credits. Small semester fees, such as the recreation centre fee and student taxes, are extra.
- Admissions
- Entry is mainly in fall. The card lists a 1 March 2027 deadline. Applicants need a bachelor's degree, a personal statement and official transcripts.
- Capstone
- Choose a Plan A thesis (4-6 credits), a Plan B project (4-6 credits), or a Plan B poster that can use internship credits.
Who it suits
Suits students who want a flexible, research-minded UX degree they can shape towards games, accessibility or policy, with a thesis option for those thinking about a PhD. Anyone who wants a fixed studio curriculum or online study should look at other programmes, including MSU's online MS in User Experience.
