About Figma

Figma is a browser-based design platform made by Figma, Inc., with desktop apps for Mac and Windows. Teams use it to design interfaces, build shared component libraries, prototype flows and hand designs to developers through Dev Mode.

The product line has grown well beyond the design editor. It now includes FigJam (whiteboarding), Figma Slides, Figma Draw, Figma Motion, Figma Make (prompt-to-code), Figma Weave (AI media workflows), and Figma Sites and Figma Buzz, both still in beta.

AI runs on a credit system. Every seat gets a monthly allowance of AI credits that is shared across Figma's AI features, and paid plans include an MCP server so coding agents can read design files.

Best for: Product teams that want design, prototyping, design systems and developer handoff in one shared, browser-based file.

Strengths

  • Real-time co-editing in the browser, with no install needed.
  • Team-wide component libraries on every paid plan.
  • Dev Mode and an MCP server give developers and coding agents direct access to specs.
  • Viewers can open and comment on files without a paid seat.
  • One account covers design, whiteboarding, slides and prompt-to-code tools.

Limitations

  • The free Starter plan is limited to a small number of team files and AI credits.
  • AI features draw on a monthly credit allowance that varies by seat type.
  • Organization and Enterprise plans are billed annually only.
  • Files live in Figma's cloud; there is no self-hosted option.

Pricing

Starter is free. Professional lists a Full seat at US$16 per month, a Dev seat at $12 and a Collab seat at $3, with monthly and annual billing offered. Organization ($55 Full seat per month) and Enterprise ($90 Full seat per month) are billed annually. Checked October 2026.

When to pick something else

  • Penpot: pick it if you need an open-source tool you can self-host
  • Sketch: pick it if you prefer a native Mac app that works offline
  • Framer: pick it if the end product is a published marketing website
  • Axure RP: pick it if you need prototypes with complex conditional logic

Checked against Figma’s own website in October 2026.
