Framer

Visual website builder and design canvas that publishes production sites with CMS, hosting and localization. It suits designers shipping marketing sites more than app-UI teams needing specs. In 2026 its AI moved to a credit-based Framer Agent that builds pages, components and code, supports all 3D transform properties (Sept 2026) and reusable 'Skills'; external agents (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) can connect.

About Framer

Framer is a web-based website builder, with desktop apps for Mac and Windows. Designers lay out pages on a canvas and publish them as live, hosted sites with a built-in CMS, analytics, SEO settings and localisation.

It began as a prototyping tool, and many UX teams still use it for high-fidelity, interactive prototypes. Its main focus today is production marketing sites rather than app prototypes.

Framer now centres on AI agents that work on the canvas: a design agent that generates and edits layouts, a CMS agent that sets up and updates content, and agents that write custom code components. Sites can also be edited from outside tools such as Claude Code, ChatGPT and Cursor. Paid plans include monthly AI credits.

Best for: Designers who want to design and publish a marketing or portfolio website themselves without handing it to developers.

Strengths

  • Designs publish directly to hosted, live websites.
  • Built-in CMS, analytics, SEO settings and localisation.
  • AI agents generate and edit pages directly on the canvas.
  • Free plan with a Framer domain, plus free viewers on all plans.
  • Large marketplace of templates and components.

Limitations

  • Priced per site, so several sites mean several plans.
  • Extra editors cost extra on each site.
  • Built for websites; app prototypes with device sensors or complex logic are better served by dedicated tools.
  • Sites are hosted on Framer; there is no export of a self-hosted codebase.

Pricing

Free is $0 with a Framer domain and 500 AI credits. Basic is $10 and Pro $30 per site per month on yearly billing; Enterprise is custom. Additional editors are $20 per seat per month and viewers are free. Checked October 2026.

When to pick something else

  • Webflow: pick it if you need deeper CMS and site-structure control
  • Figma: pick it if you are designing app interfaces rather than publishing a site
  • ProtoPie: pick it if you need sensor-driven or multi-device prototypes
  • Relume: pick it if you want AI sitemaps and wireframes before building

Checked against Framer’s own website in October 2026.

Framer is a UI Design tool for Web, Mac and Windows. A paid plan costs about $120 a year, and there is a free plan. In our comparison it supports AI, pen Tool, collaboration, comments, artboards, symbols, 3D Transform, responsive and prototyping. Handoff is only partly supported. It does not offer offline.
