About Adobe XD

Adobe XD is a vector design and prototyping app for Mac and Windows made by Adobe. It was used for wireframes, UI design, click-through prototypes with auto-animate, and sharing designs for review.

Adobe states that XD is in maintenance mode. That means existing users keep getting bug fixes and security updates, but no new features are being built. The old product page at adobe.com/products/xd.html now redirects to the XD help centre.

Existing projects still open and work. For new work, most teams have moved to actively developed tools, so XD is best treated as a legacy tool for maintaining older files.

Best for: Teams that already have XD files to maintain and an Adobe subscription that still includes it.

Strengths

  • Familiar Adobe interface that links to other Creative Cloud apps.
  • Auto-animate prototyping and voice triggers are built in.
  • Existing XD files still open and keep receiving bug and security fixes.
  • Native apps for both Mac and Windows.

Limitations

  • In maintenance mode, so no new features will ship.
  • No standalone price is published, and the product page now points to the help centre.
  • Adobe has said it will end support at some point, with notice, but has not given a date.

Pricing

Adobe does not list a standalone price for XD; it has been offered only through Creative Cloud subscriptions. See Adobe's Creative Cloud plans page for current options. Checked October 2026.

When to pick something else

  • Figma: pick it if you want the most widely used actively developed replacement
  • Penpot: pick it if you want a free, open-source replacement
  • Sketch: pick it if your team works on Macs
  • ProtoPie: pick it if you used XD mainly for interactive prototypes

Checked against Adobe XD’s own website in October 2026.

Adobe XD is a prototyping tool for Mac and Windows. Pricing: creative Cloud only. In our comparison it supports design, animations, transitions, data, handoff, export and voice. Tasks is only partly supported. It does not offer code, inputs, variables, sensors, analytics and heatmap.
